Delegate Albert C. Pollard, Jr.

Like all teenagers, I rarely had gas in my car. Once, I was driving and my father informed me the tank was on empty. I told him that, no, I had plenty of gas -- a good quarter tank left. He leaned over and, looking straight at the gas gauge, said "ah... A Parallax Problem."

Graduation 2010

Excerpted from my key note address to the 2010 Class of Washington & Lee High School in Montross, Virginia, during their commencement exercises on Saturday, June 19, 2010:

Congratulations, Class of 2010.

It is a statement of the obvious that what you are about to do is receive your high school diploma. You should be proud; here you are at the sunset of your adolescence as a young adult receiving your diploma.

You have earned this diploma. For the past 17, 18, 19 years you have learned what has been taught to you – and all of that learning goes into the symbol of the diploma. More...

Shipbuilding, Not Boat Building

Growing up on the Northern Neck, I’ve always been around boats. Indeed, my dad has built several boats, including one 40’ Chesapeake Bay deadrise that was a mastery of wood and craftsmanship. It was a three-ply mahogany vessel made with a cold-molded West epoxy system.

Needless to say, this did not prepare me well for last week’s tour of the Newport News shipyard. More...

My Least Productive Month

Being in government I often talk about efficiencies, when in reality I should be talking about productivity.

I learned this last summer when I had one of the least productive months of my life. I had involuntarily switched my phone so that it vibrated every time I got a call, email or text message. For 30 days, I got nothing done until I switched the function off. More...

Visit Stratford

Once, when I as a teenager, my mom was trying to talk my dad into going on a trip. I don’t remember exactly where or exactly when, but I clearly remember my dad pushing back.

“People come from all over the world just to visit the Northern Neck,” he said. “I don’t see why I need to go anywhere else.” More...

McDonnell and Pollard at Lumber Smith

Governor Bob McDonnell Visits Lumber Smith Sawmills Booth.

Last week, Governor Bob McDonnell visited Virginia Forest Products Association Richmond Expo and stopped by the booth of several Virginia Companies.

One of those companies was Woodwrights, LLC of Lively, VA.  Woodwrights makes and sells Lumber Smith portable Sawmills.  According to Randy Bush, president of the Virginia Forest Products Association, Woodwrights was placed on the Governor's tour because it is a Virginia based company that is growing and exporting.

Lumber Smith sawmills are now in 47 states and five countries.

Albert Pollard, president of Woodwrights, LLC said, "It was an honor to have the Governor drop by and ask questions.  My only regret is that we didn't have a chance to fire up a sawmill and let him cut some lumber."

Eddy Whichard, also of Woodwrights commented, "It is a real honor to have the Governor recognize the contribution we are making to the state and local economy."

Portable sawmills are small horsepower machines used by hobbyists or specialty professionals for processing a log into lumber.  They are often transported directly to the tree and are considered to be lower impact than traditional milling operations.
